Springfield is a township in eastern Delco, between Swarthmore and Drexel Hill, with Baltimore Pike and the Blue Route running through it. The 101 trolley crosses it on the way to Media, and Smedley Park sits along the Crum Creek near the Blue Route.
A few older streets were built along the trolley before the war, but most of Springfield filled in after 1945. That gives the township a great many brick and stone colonials, split-levels and ranches from the 1940s through the 1960s, on regular lots with a driveway, a garage and a deck or patio out back. These are houses that get updated rather than replaced, a kitchen or a basement or an exterior at a time.

What we see on Springfield houses
Brick below, siding above
A typical Springfield colonial is brick on the first floor and siding or shingle on the second. The brick needs nothing. The upper story, the shutters and the trim do, so the job is quoted on the painted surfaces rather than the size of the house.
Siding that rubs off white
Run a hand along original aluminum siding on a 1950s house and it comes away white. That oxidized layer is what new paint would be holding on to, so it is washed off first, and bare metal is primed before any color goes on.
Decks that have gone gray
Springfield lots are built around the back yard, and plenty of them have a wood deck that has weathered to gray. Cleaning off the old stain and putting new stain on is a job of its own, and it pairs easily with an exterior repaint.
Stairs between every level
Split-levels put short flights of stairs between floors, with open rails and walls that run up two levels beside them. Those tall stair walls take ladders and planks set on the steps, and they take longer than the rooms around them.
