We paint cabinets for homeowners across northern Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania. Kitchen cabinets, and also bathroom vanities, built-ins, pantries and laundry room cupboards, whatever they are finished in now. Most jobs start because the cabinets are solid and the kitchen looks dated, and you would rather keep what you have than tear it out. Cabinet refinishing is the same work, a new finish over whatever is on the cabinets now.

We look at the cabinets
What they are made of, what they are finished in now and how they have worn all change the preparation, so we look before we quote. The written proposal comes after that visit.

Counters, floors, appliances and walls are covered before any preparation starts, so the dust and the finish stay on the cabinets and off everything else.
Prep, then paint
Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking on them, so they are cleaned before they are sanded, and primed where the old finish needs it. Then the finish goes on.
Walk it with you
We go through every door and drawer with you before the job is finished, so anything you want looked at again gets done while we are still there.
Cabinets we paint, in the kitchen and out of it
Kitchens are where most people start, and the same work suits every other fitted cupboard in the house. What changes the preparation is the finish a cabinet has now, not the room it is in.
Kitchen cabinets
Uppers, lowers, islands and pantry runs. Years of cooking leave a film on every surface near the range, and it has to come off before anything is sanded, because a finish put over it will not hold. The kitchen takes more daily handling than any other room in the house, so the preparation matters here more than anywhere.
Bathroom vanities
A small job on its own and a natural addition to a bathroom repaint. Vanities live with steam and splashes, so a finish that can be wiped down matters more than the color does.
Built-ins and bookcases
Fitted shelving, window seats, entertainment units and the cupboards flanking a fireplace. They are part of the wall, so painting them with the trim rather than around them is what makes a room read as finished.
Laundry, mudroom and pantry cupboards
The hard working cupboards nobody photographs. They take the same preparation as the kitchen and they can be done alongside it in the same visit.
What the cabinets are finished in now
Whatever finish is on the cabinets today, it can be painted over once it has been prepared for it. The finish decides how much preparation there is, which is one of the things we look at on the visit and one of the reasons the proposal follows the visit rather than a phone call.
Stained and varnished wood
The oak, maple and cherry kitchens that are still perfectly sound and simply look their age. The clear coat over the stain is slick, so it is scuffed back to give the new finish something to hold. Open grained wood shows its grain through paint, and whether that suits the kitchen is worth deciding before the color is.
Cabinets that have been painted before
An earlier paint job is a starting point, not a problem, as long as it is sound. Where it is peeling or chipped it is taken back to a firm edge before the new finish goes on, because paint is only as good as what is under it.
Factory finishes and laminates
Factory finished doors and laminate faces are smooth and hard, which is good for the result and demanding for the preparation, since a smooth surface gives paint nothing to grip until it has been prepared. They take a different approach from bare wood and we say which on the visit.
Cabinets that have worn
Hands find the same places every day, the pulls, the door edges by the range, the drawer fronts under the sink, and the finish there is often worn back to the wood. Those spots are built back up before the color goes on, so the finish is even across the door rather than thin where it used to be worn.
Common questions
Can you paint cabinets that are stained rather than painted?
Yes. Stained and varnished wood, cabinets that have been painted before and factory finished doors can all be painted once they have been prepared for it. The finish they have now changes the preparation, not whether the job can be done.
Do you only paint kitchen cabinets?
No. Kitchens are where most people start, and bathroom vanities, built-ins, bookcases, pantries and laundry cupboards get the same treatment. If it is a fitted cupboard, it can be painted.
How long will I be without the kitchen?
It depends on the project. The number of cabinets, what they are finished in now and how much preparation they need all change it, so there is no honest single answer. We go through what to expect with you before the work starts, including what you will need to clear out of the way.
Can the uppers and the lowers be different colors?
Yes. One color throughout, or one color on the uppers and another on the lowers. Both are common, and the walk round is the time to settle it.
Is cabinet painting covered by the warranty?
Yes. Cabinet work carries the same 3-year warranty as all of our work.
Where the kitchens are
The kitchens most worth painting are in houses that were built well and fitted with solid cabinets, and northern Delaware has plenty of those. The 1920s and 1930s houses of Westover Hills and Alapocas, and the 1940s houses through Fairfax along Concord Pike, are the kind of house where a kitchen tends to be worth keeping rather than replacing.
The development housing around Christiana that came with the retail corridor, and the close set houses of Newport, carry the fitted kitchens of their own decades. Over the line, the borough grid of Kennett Square and the large railroad suburb houses of Wallingford and Rose Valley come with cabinetry and built-ins that were made to last.
